Current Lab Members
Ryan (Jackson, Michigan) is a junior at the University of Michigan. He plans on graduating with a degree in Biochemistry. His future plans include eventually attending medical school. He began working in the lab in September 2012. Ryan is currently learning many lab techniques and assisting with Ali Dorchak’s research projects.
Pallavi (Farmington Hills, MI) is a senior at the University of Michigan. She plans on graduating with a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Spanish. Her future plans include teaching science in high needs schools for two years and eventually attending graduate school. She began working in the lab in January 2010. Pallavi is working on a project involving the peroxisomal protein, ASP3, characterizing its DEG15 cleavage site for her senior honors thesis.
Kyle (Kentwood, MI) is a graduate from the University of Michigan. He graduated with a degree in Honors Cell and Molecular Biology. He is currently applying to doctoral programs to study cancer biology. He has been working in the lab since January 2010. Kyle is working on a project which involves locating the cleavage sites in several predicted PTS2 proteins, CSY1, 2 and 3 when cleaved by DEG15.
Nirali Shah (Bloomfield Hills, MI) is a sophomore at the University of Michigan. She plans on graduating with a degree in Biology and a minor in Gender and Health. Her future plans include attending medical school. She started working in the lab in February 2012. Nirali is currently working on characterizing cleavage by DEG15 in three CYS1/2/3 mutants.
Tara (Swampscott, Massachusetts) is a senior at the University of Michigan. She plans on graduating with a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She is planning on working in a research setting for a few years post graduation and eventually attending graduate school. She is working with the putative peroxisomal protein, LACS6, characterizing its targeting signal and DEG15 processing site for her senior honors thesis.
Ali (Pittsburgh, PA) received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA and received her Master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She serves as the Lab Manager for the Olsen Lab. Ali joined the lab in May of 2011, and is currently investigating two putative PTS2 proteins: INDA and ACX3.
Dr. Olsen (Omaha, Nebraska) did her undergraduate degree in Biology, Math and German from Doane College in Nebraska. She then earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Davis. She was awarded the Class of 1923 Memorial Teaching Award in 1996, the Amoco Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2000, and is now an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. She was recently awarded the John Dewey Undergraduate teaching award and is serving as the Program in Biology Faculty Director.
